Today was my first day here in Idaho, so Today I met with a women named Pam Peterson who I interviewed over lunch and asked a lot of questions about the medical field and what I need to do to achieve my goal of being a Veterinarian. I also worked on my grandparents farm and helped them with the horses and cleaning up the farm. For the first day I didn't do much which was good so I can get myself into the feel of my work.

Today was like Monday I got to go to the local Military center here in Nampa and I got to see how the army can benefit me for being in the medical field. I found that this was a good experience to see my options and to see the ways I can become a Veterinarian through the Army. I got a lot of cool merchandise like T-shirts, water bottles, and backpacks which was really cool. For this week I will be doing the same thing with interviewing more people that know about the education along with the people I will be working with.

Today, I went to a veterinarian teaching school and got to talk to the faculty on how they teach and what they teach. They also had a baby cow in the back at the time and I got to observe it and see what was wrong with it. The baby cow had its legs grown in wrong and they were turned completely around. It turns out while we were observing we came to a conclusion that when the mother was present with the baby It ate some toxic plants a lot and caused the baby to have these birth defects. That was a really cool experience and it was really cool to see how these people teach and understanding why the baby cow was like that.

Today I went to NNU, the local college in the town I'm at to talk to a retired professor about the importance in doing what you love and what we will like to do for a career. We talked for an hour on the campus then went to have such and talk about my internship. This was a good learning talk for me and it really opened my eyes as I go through this internship. I also helped on my grandparents farm with the houses and their feet and feeding them as well. Today was a calm day and I was able to take a lot away from these experiences.

Today I went to one of the Veterinarian hospitals in the area called Ken Kubosumi's Animal Clinic and stopped by a college campus to talk a little bit on the cost for the fields I'm interested in. I didn't do much at the college but after that I went to the hospital and worked the afternoon there. I got to put in microchips in dogs and did a urinalysis on cats. I was also able to see a unique surgery on a boxer, The dog ate an entire beach towel and chunks of wood and he then couldn't eat or go to the bathroom. So they did surgery on him and removed the towel. The thing that everyone worried about was that he wouldn't eat; but it was only because of the surgery and the fact that he hasn't been used to being able to swallow food. At the end of the day I talked to Ken about veterinarian school and he was able to give me some pretty cool tips on what to do to enhance your skills as a veterinarian. This was a really fun day and I look forward to going back there next week.

Weekly Reflection
This week was a good first week into the internship and I really learned the value of education especially in becoming a veterinarian. Throughout this week I was able to learn how to interview a lot of people on how it is going to college and how much money went into it. I also learned how to work in a small animal hospital environment which was really cool. The success this week was finding a good idea of how I can better myself in the future and being able to help sick and injured animals feel better. The challenges were probably not knowing enough about the animal during the work environment to do a lot to help. This week I worked with Ken Kubosumi who ran the veterinarian hospital I was at. I was very surprised at how much repeating stuff you do when you're at a clinic and also how much it costs to go to school for veterinarian work. When I worked at the clinic, I contributed to the work environment by helping the works with crazy animals and helping the veterinarians collect data. So far for my project on this internship I've been able to get a small idea of what I can do for the project but other then that I haven't done much. My goals of next week is to get more engaged in the veterinarian hospitals and contribute more to the work environment.

Today I started the day off by taking a quick visit to a horse breeding farm to see if I would be interested in being with big Animals. I got to see how they check for incoming colts and got to see how they store the embryos for future breeding. That was pretty cool. Then After I went out to lunch I went to the Nampa Idaho Veterinarian Hospital were I worked tell seven. This was a really busy day and was really fun. I got to do so check ups, got to do some urinalysis and blood measurements, and got to see some emergency check ins with some dogs. I did do a few blood measurements which was really cool to see how they did that and I was really excited to see the emergencies. There was one case were this family came in with a chihuahua that had been attacked by a husky. The chihuahua had been really badly injured in the crouch area and was in a lot of pain. We had to put him to sleep which was really cool to do and we fixed him right up. This was a fun day and I can't wait to do more soon.

Today I spent the day at the same animal hospital and worked the whole day. I began work with the dogs which was really fun and I got to pay and help them out a lot. I cleaned their kennels, took them outside, and fed and gave them water. I liked that a lot and got to connect with the dogs which was pretty cool. After that I helped build some heat pads for the animals so they don't get cold in the cages after surgery. I did that along with other stuff until lunch. After lunch I sat in on a lot of animal cases. There was a lot of dental work and there was even a big emergency were a dog broke his leg in half and we had to get X-rays. Hopefully we'll be doing surgery on the leg tomorrow which will be really exciting.

Today, I worked at the same hospital which is Idaho Veterinary Hospital were I was able to be with the veterinarians and work on dental work and surgeries with them. The morning was all dental and I learned how to put catheters into the dogs and cats along with being able to inject medicine into spastic spots to help the animals. It was a lot of hard work and standing but it was really fun and I got to meet some of the new veterinarians working in the work place. Then in the afternoon I got to conduct surgeries on two dogs. the first had a tumor in her right arm pit and we had to get that out. After that we took the poor dog from yesterday that broke her leg and we did surgery on that to put it back into place. This was really cool and I got to look at first hand how a surgery is proceeded. I loved helping out in this surgery and it made me feel so good that I was able to contribute to help save this dog.

Today I went to Ken Kubosumi's Animal Clinic and I got to do surgeries throughout the day. This was an amazing experience and I got to see a lot. Through out the day there was a lot of surgeries for tumors in dogs. The first one was a nice start to the day and it was a big success. The second procedure was a small poodle dog that was diagnosed with a tumor in November, 2012 and the owners didn't do anything about it tell now. So the tumor was the size of a football and had to be taken out. The surgery was so crazy and very intense the dog wasn't doing so well from the start and required a lot of assistance to help keep her alive. We successfully got the tumor out and everything was looking good from there. Sadly shortly after we took her out of the surgical room, she stopped breathing and all the veterinarians tried to revive her. Unfortunately it was to late and the poor dog died. Even though this was a sad experience I got to see how everything in a hospital isn't always going to work out the way they should. After the death the mood in the clinic was very sad and it was a slow day from there. This was an amazing experience and I can't wait to come back soon.

Today I got to take a day off from clinic work so I thought I could stop by a dairy farm with a local vet and see how big animal vets do things. I didn't stay long but I got to help him in some ways. I got to herd baby calves into a shoot to help the vet give medicine to them and so on. I learned today that large animal veterinarian work is not really for me. So this experience was a pretty good learning day for me.

Weekly reflection
This week was a really good learning experience and I got to do so much over the course of the five days. For this week I mainly worked at Idaho Veterinary Hospital and one day at Ken Kumosumi's pet clinic. I got to help with the dog kennels and I do some pet check ups through out the week, I got to do a lot of surgeries with the animals and that was an amazing experience to see how the veterinarians work on these animals. Iv'e learned how to put catheters into dogs and cats, Iv'e learned how to prepare a broken leg, do dental work and many things that I loved to see and learn. A couple challenges that I faced during this was knowing which medicine to pick up for the veterinarians and seeing a very innocent dog die right in front of me. With the medicine Dr. Calhune wanted of surgery and other medicine needs I had to get them and help inject them into the animal. This was very hard at first and I struggled a little bit but I got the hang of it by the end of the week. The other challenge was really crazy. I've never seen a dog die right before my eyes and that was a very weird experience; but I know it was good to see the bad side of being a veterinarian. Even though it was sad I learned a lot about this kind of work in the work field. I was very surprised of how well I picked up handling the medicine, I thought I was going to take a long time to get it down but with Dr. Calhune's help I was able to do really good work with the medicine. Thought this week Iv'e been making some pretty good notes on my LINK project and have a better idea of what I'm going to do. My goals for the upcoming week is to really get the most I can out of the work Im doing and to work very hard.

Today I worked at the Idaho Veterinary Hospital were I helped with check ups and quick medicine work. Today was a nice relax Monday and I got to ease my way back into work. I helped a lot with whiled animals like squirrels, falcons and ducks. These were mostly animals that People found around town and brought them in. There was a lot of fractured wings and blind animals that came in today. This was a nice start to the week and I can't wait to keep working hard.

Today I didn't have to go to the clinic so I thought I would stop by for a little bit with my friend Andy Curran who is a orthopedic surgeon and I got to be with him for the day. This was really cool and I got to see some very cool ways to fix all these joint pains. There was a lot of knee replacements going on and a lot of cases with pain in the back. I really liked this whole experience and really opened my eyes to all the cool medical perfections out there. One case was with a bad knee were the joint fluid had been completely worn out and the bones were pretty much on top of each other. So what Dr. Curran did was inject some other joint fluid that is much tougher and can help separate the joints but the cool thing was is that the man's joints had blood in them so when he ejected the needle blood kept coming out and wouldn't stop. This was so cool and that was a very investing thing to see blood in the bones. I will be going back there on Thursday again since I don't have veterinarian work to do on that day and watch some surgeries with knee replacement and achilles tendon reconstruction. I'm excited to be there and watch all this cool stuff.

Today I worked at the clinic and did surgeries all day. There was a lot of knee surgeries and neuters and they were all very interesting. I was able to make and inject all the medicine that we had to give them and I got to use control drugs. These drugs are controlled by the government and they are needed to be tracked while they are used due to veterinarians abusing them in the past. This was a cool responsibility to have and it was very cool. After that the surgeries began and we got to help out a lot of dogs with everything. It was cool to see the knee surgeries because the bones were always to free or two tight so we had to fix them to help the dog. One dog had a old wire stuck in his left knee and had to reconstruct his other left knee that took a long time and we had to use a lot of fancy equipment. One sad story about today was when I first got in there was a dog that got hit by a car and was rushed to the clinic and had to be operated on. Sadly the dogs wounds were to severe and we had to let the poor thing go. This was a crazy and fun day and I learned a lot.

Today I took a day off of veterinary work and went to my friend and andy's orthopedic hospital were I was able to be a part of 6 surgeries through the day. This was a complete different set up then Idaho's Veterinary Hospital. We had to were gowns and masks through out the entire day. Which is different form the clinic because a lot of the times the surgeons put on masks or surgical wear to do the procedure. This was super cool because I got my own gown and mask and I got to see some really cool stuff. There was a lot of knee surgeries were they would cut small holes in the knee and do a closed surgery. This is were they do not open up the spot of the body to work on it instead what they did was stick a pole with a small camera at the end and stuck it into the inception and flush all the blood out with water and they look around and fix the knee up. This was so interesting because I've never seen this done before and it took shorter because they didn't have to stitch up the skin as much. What was also cool was they had this huge eating lounge were after surgeries we would come in here and eat and watch basket ball while the people were getting the next patient ready. This was very cool and kind of relaxed the situation a lot. This was an amazing experience and I took a lot out form it.

Today was my last day at the clinic and my last day working here in this internship. Today was a slow day and not a lot of workers showed up today so we just did a little bit of work and talked a bit. We walked dogs and gave medicine to sick dogs all day while I was at the clinic. One interesting one was a cat that had cancer on her face and it ate away the cat's bones and skin. This was really weird and ver cool to watch. At Lunch I thought I could stop by Ken Kubosumi's pet clinic for a little bit and watched some stuff there. There was one thing that was very cool was a dog that gave birth to five puppies and we got to take care of them and get them ready for growing up. That was really cool and it was a nice way to end the day and the internship. No I must go home and have a nice spring break this was a very nice internship and I learned a lot.
