The Place Where I Belong
Max Ickes
Abstract:
People have always been looking for the perfect place to settle down in life and this describes it all. Today the world is too fast and busy to find our way to our place, we’re too busy working or we need to be somewhere so we never stop to search. Sense of places are everywhere and they have a value that can not be beet. They are all around us but yet we pass them by. In our fast cars and our smart devices we only pass a glance. We need break free from the grasps of the busy American lifestyle and become one with where we are meant to be.
In this day and age it’s getting harder to escape the claws of the busy industrial life to find your true place with the world. People search for this place in the world but some are fortunate to find it. Whether it be in the desert, the beach, or the snowy mountains people will do anything to find the place where they belong. As a boy I grew up in the mountains, able to run free without a care in the world. My dad would take me to these cliffs over Electra lake and we would look over the valley and see nothing but nature, bald eagles fly by in the distance as I see the trees sway back and forth from the cooling wind. This was the amazing part of being here, with the lake on the left and enormous mountains with snow shining in the sun on the right. The wind would blow through my hair and give me chills while the rock underneath me would keep my feet warm. This was were I belong, this was my sense of place.
My dad works at a hydro plant in the middle of mountains where the only way to get in is by train or helicopter. Even though it is taking out part of the landscape, it has also made a beautiful place where people are able to enjoy being away from the busy city. Without it, I would never be able to be in touch with nature like I am today. I remember being in the power plant hearing the powerful turbines spin as the water shot out the side creating a refreshing breeze as if I'm standing right under a powerful waterfall that can make my spine shake as we walk across the river. When I step outside the plant I'm embraced with the clean air of the Colorado forest where I can now run into the open space without a care in the world. It feels crazy how cut off from the world we are here. Not a lot of internet out there or bars on my phone to keep in touch with everyone, but that's what’s so special about being out here. With the mountains above me and the river and the dense forest all around me I feel more free than I could ever be anywhere within civilization.
Now that I'm older I appreciate these things more and more everyday but sadly as the days turn into weeks I continue to see my places less and less. With busy nights, I very quickly forget about the wonders of being out in the quiet world. With the only sounds I hear are the sounds of the trees in the wind and nighttime birds flying by. The busy days keep me from hearing and experiencing those quiet nights and with that it becomes more and more trapped in the back of my mind. I feel empty, no more fresh air no more free space to clear my thoughts. Today I can only pay short visits to Nature. Mainly just stopping by on a road trip for five minutes or just happening to stop by only to hurry off to the busy American lifestyle.
The American way of life is disconnected from what the true beauty of life really is. Today everything is so fast-paced that no one ever gets a chance to take a break and look around. The world is fading into the shadows behind the big industrial buildings that we walk into everyday. It’s more of a fantasy to be able to live outside the protective walls of the American civilization. We see movies and videos of people wandering the Great Plains or people breathing the fresh air of the Rockies. No longer do we do that our selves. We stay buried in our work and our devices the world just passes by and we don’t even pass a glance to see race by.
Not a lot of people see how this is happening but I do. The busy American world blinds and pushes us along making us unable to even glance at the world beyond our reach. Every day it becomes more and more of a struggle, and even though I know what my sense of place I still haven't find true one place where I can call my true sense of place. Right now it’s just a thought, I’ve been to places that makes my heart ring with satisfaction but even though I still search. Even for me it gets harder every day. I as well as every other American am apart of the system of fast pace reality. It all revolves around money and it drives the big American machine that people are sucked into. This machine is a struggle that is very hard to get rid of but it takes just a little bit of people a day to find their way through the labyrinth out to freedom to stand up for what we need to do.

Reflection
This project was based on the energy usage in our world and finding our sense of place were we belong. What we did leading up to exhibition was read articles about energy and sense of place, then we wrote an essay on our sense of place followed by our take action project which was us finding a way to help out in the community. My sense of place essay was on my sense of place and how we are getting farther and farther away from finding our sense of place due to the new American busy lifestyle. My take action project is helping out with the dog community by planting grass at the dog park. The dog park helps people go outside and take time off of their busy lives and go play with their dogs. I think planting grass will help people see the beauty of the dog park and help the environment grow better with spreading water to the ground and keeping the area around it cooler and alive.

Native American Studies Project
For this project we looked at the expansion of America and what happened to the native people. We read about different perspectives on battles and other events during this time and got to see the bias about historical writing. After that We wrote our own essay about a event during this time and gathered different sources about our topic. Mine was the railroad and the horrible things that went on to making it.
Rhetorical Discourse Project
For this project is were we got to venture out on our own topic an use rhetorical devices to make our speeches more powerful. Throughout this year we learned about how rhetoric is all around us and got to find places were they exist. Like in politics were postilions use a lot of rhetoric to per-sway the audience. For my rhetorical speech I did the hidden truth of white privilege and how it connects to racism in America.
The Hidden Truth of White Privilege Speech
Question: “How much has racism been eradicated since the civil rights act, ask the audience and tell them that its lower and lower.”
“Well its as much as maybe even 10% eradicated.”
video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vAbpJW_xEc
Today people are blind to racism. There’s this form called white privilege, and it means that if you're white, you have the privilege of having an easier time than people of color, you have better benefits in life, and never having to deal with the atrocities that people of color go through their daily lives.
This video shows how the white man has does not see the struggles that people of color have to deal with and is blind to what he says, he also blames the people of color for their own victimization
This video is the tip of the iceberg of what is happening today. today racism exists today all over the place and the reason we can’t see it is because white privilege.
Today white people choose to think that everything is ok with race and refuse to look outside themselves to see what's happening all around them. The thing is with being white, people never have to worry about being judged harshly for the color of their skin, or worry that they will be stopped on the streets by police by the way they look.
Personally, I have never worried about being judged by the color of my skin or my mom doesn't dread the day i am judged poorly and get shot by a police officer or she doesn't think that ladies will hold their perces tighter every time i walk by.
But on the other side its very different, There was a black man in wal-mart being shot and killed for carrying a toy gun for his kids, the sad thing is that the decision was already made to shoot the man without even analyzing the situation.
These are the sad incidents that happen because of stereotypes that people of color face throughout their lives. what started it was a person calling 911 because they made an assumption that this black man had a real gun by the way he looked and dressed. how would you like it if your dad was shot and killed for the way he looked.
Even though this is an extreme case this kind of stereotyping happens all the time. Like stop and frisk in New York city. Where people searched on the streets for illegal business
But the thing is, 85% of the people stopped was black males, 85%!!!!! and only 2% of all these stops actually had something to do with illegal business.
This is the sad truth of our country and the thing is, so many people don’t see it and don’t do anything about it.
As long as we keep do nothing and go on with our normal lives, nothing will change and we will keep living in a country who is racist. we need except or horrible past instead of trying to forget it. we need to take it on ourselves to see the wrong in our lives and address them. this is not only people of color’s problem it’s everyone’s problem and it will take everyone to finally eliminate this.

Project Reflection:
This project gave us the opportunity to create our own sort of rhetorical discourse and we were able to show our ideas to the public. What we need was to come with an idea to be bias on and add ways to per-sway the audience to see our view point. My Project was about the hidden truth of white privilege and I talked about how white people can't see how racism is still a big thing.
My speech incorporated a lot of different types of rhetorical devices in different ways. I used pathos, ethos, and logos to help my speech. Pathos appealed to the emotion in the audience by introducing personal connections. I used logos by giving them statistics to give the audience a good understanding of what's happening. I used a way to connect everyone in the room to make them realize what's happening today and having a way to fix it and way to get together. These gave my speech a good perspective and a good way to make the audience think about what's happening with racism.
This was such an awesome project and I connected to it in a lot of ways. I connected personally to this project because I am white and I looked within myself to see the wrong in my life with everything how I could fix it. I loved being able to see everything in a different way. I loved learning about white privilege and the stereotypes that people of color have to deal with. It was really amazing to learn it and see the different perspectives and I loved seeing how white people can't see that this is a big issue. These were awesome to learn about and I loved this project.
I think the most difficult thing that I had to do for this project was get the speech together to make it mean a lot to the audience. I wanted to show a lot of videos that showed my perspective and I had so much things to say that i had to fit in to a 5 minute speech. It was also hard to do some critique at the last minute and I wanted to change a lot of stuff but i then realized it was all OK good. Plus just having then not having stuff was not goo like the video of Walmart an the slideshow. This was a challenge but I made it work and I am really happy with my product.
I have learned so much about rhetoric, ideology, and the American experience. With rhetoric I can see it in everything now and I love seeing it. I can see within everyone the ideology withing everything and the American experience has never been more clear to me and all the things make it up that I didn't see all of them. I can see how with myself, I see how I see people and seeing how I am privileged within this country. I can see everything that I have to face now and seeing the things that I can do to change everything.

Seminar on Race/Crash
Racism in the United states
I like to talk about racism because it's still a big problem in our country and it's important because we all need to see the problem and see what we are doing and how it is bad to all of us. Its also important to us so we can realize what we and other people are doing so we can dress and try to fix this problem. With today racism is out there and a lot of people don't really see it. The events that were said in this seminar were all over the place. Like our history and the civil rights movement and letting black kids be in white schools and what people today think of other people and of them selves like in the movie the black men were thinking of them selves to much. These were really good to talk about because I feel like our bad history isn't over because even though we past the civil rights act we still have a lot of trouble accepting who we all are and instead what dan said is that we find the bad in other races and criticize them so we can feel better about our selves. To me, racism is to exclude people and groups of color and target them. The big question is how might racism end? Well to tell them the truth I don't think it could end or end any time soon but there could ways that could work.
Everyone's question is how does racism play out in today's society. Even though people think racism has gone down a lot, but its far from over. From the incidents today to the discrimination that people encounter, there is still large amount of discrimination and racism in America. Each article or video I read or saw there was a wide variety of racism. The one on cops were crazy, I would never think that our officers would show aggression to other races. Like with one article that we read people gave to many examples of over use of force on black citizens. One man was chocked to death by a cop even though he said he couldn't breath the cop keeps chocking him. From the movie Crash we saw that some cops were racist to the black couple and other people during the movie. I thought which was cool in the movie was that the cop realized how he hurts people when he had to rescue the black women from the car and she wouldn't let him because of what he did. This was a great example of what happens in these situations and we talked about it really good during the seminar.
Another situation of racism is whites taking advantage, or thinking bad of blacks, this was really big in the crash movie. Though out the movie the black characters were constantly thought down upon and taken advantage of. Like at the beginning of the movie the black men were arguing that the waiter wouldn't come to them because they were black and how the white women get cold all a sudden when they came across them. Also when the TV director had to do everything the white man said or else there would be a problem. These show that racism is still out there and though some people still don't see that racism is still a big deal its very alive in today's society.
The big question in this seminar was how might racism end. Well to tell you the truth I think its way harder then what everyone thinks. With all the problems in today’s society its hard to say when racism might end. In the movie it seemed even though the people faced their problems and realized their problems and each others problems, the racism still wasn't completely eradicated. Like the white cop who thought he wasn't racist ended up shooting a black man because he thought he had a gun. It shows that even the people who think they aren’t racist at all still are racist with out even knowing it. Even though these people in this move realized it, some people are completely blind to not only their racist actions, but how racism is around them and that they cant see the details around them.
Racism to me won't end for a very long time. It's going to take a while for just a small group of people to realize whats happening with this conflict. In the movie, the characters realized their problems and how that effects people and that to me is the best way to solve this conflict with race. With the white privilege mother article she talked about how she realizes how thankful she is to have white sons. How she doesn't worry about her sons being shot or women holding their purses tighter every time they walk down the street, but people aren’t as open to stuff like this. In the video on the today's show also showed how people are blind to racism. They asked the white people how much has racism has been eradicated, and they said 50% while the black people said 12%. This shows how people are blind to this situation. This movie and this seminar has opened my eyes and ears to everthing that I couldn't see before, and the way I see it, racism might never end as long as I live or as long as my children are alive. Tell we can open our eyes and see whats happening all around us, we may never see the end of racism.
