My Mask Essay
Max’s World
By Max Ickes
When I was in 3rd grade I was diagnosed with A.D.H.D. and A.D.D, and everybody treated me like the kid who can’t learn and is crazy. I have learned to accept that I have A.D.H.D and relive that it’s a good thing to have A.D.H.D. and being happy all the time as well. I am still learning to accept My A.D.D. It also feels like when people look at me they see a hyper and crazy kid with not much of an identity, but this essay is supposed to show that there is a lot more to my identity than just that.
The dog on my mask is showing my dog like personality, because of my A.D.H.D being a golden retriever is a great of example of who I am because cause I’m so happy and energetic. Without my personality I don’t know what would of happened to me, nothing would’ve stayed the same, I would never have the same friends who gave the dog personality in the first place. My personality is a big part of my identity because like a golden retriever, I am loyal to everyone and I make everyone happy. Plus with my personality I can make other people happy.
The ski on my mask represents my love of skiing, and how my friends have been socializing me. They have impacted my identity so much with being nice to everyone, to have fun and to not do bad things. Without them I would be a horrible kid that doesn’t appreciate anyone I meet or I would be the kid who sits in the back of the room and does nothing all day . Skiing is also a great way to channel my energy and also helps me focus for the next day and calms me down. My friends also make me realize that life is like a ski hill, some parts of the hill are steep, fast and fun, some are flat and hard to get through, and some days are cloudy and miserable and some are sunny and fun.
The lacrosse stick also represents my love for sports and how sports have socialized my identity. I need to play sports to fit in with everyone and to deal with it. Now that I am older, I realize that playing sports doesn’t matter on society, and I also realize that sports I s a good way to channel my energy better. When I was young I played football, lacrosse, basketball, and hockey, but football had the biggest impact on my identity. It shaped my identity by pushing me to achieve what is important to me. Plus it changed how I am in society, and without it I probably wouldn’t be able to keep up the norms of society that exist today. It’s also a family tradition to do sports, on my mom side the boys played football and basketball, and on my dad’s side he played lacrosse and also basketball, but over all those sports, football influenced my identity the most. It also is very cool to be playing sports within the family tree. Even though I only play lacrosse now, all the other sports still have a strong impact on my identity.
The Spain colors on my mask represent how I appreciate my family from Spain. They all have an impact me and they made me realize in the past few years that people are different in many ways and you have to forget that they are different and to be nice to them. Plus they help me engage my energy to have fun. They also are a little crazy with helps me relate to them. So you could imagine what we do when we get together. When our grandma takes us grocery shopping she has to tell us “Go do whatever you want to do, just pretend like you guys don’t know me until we leave. So it means a lot to me to have cousins in a different country because of how they help me realize how to respect and love the people all around you, and to have lots of fun
The fist is to show how the boys such as me have been socialized to be tough on the inside and tough on the outside. It’s also helps with looking like I’m very active since I have A.D.H.D. Being tough and manly is so big in this culture because represents how you are to be in the social groups. Plus Without it, my identity would be changed and I would not be the same. This is such an important norm that if a boy broke that norm, would be excluded being from a lot of social groups. It also is a way of expressing how you are as a person such as how you choose to be the toughest kid in school or you can be an average toughness and be cool.
I hope you enjoyed my article on how I have been socialized. I now realize that this is not an essay, it’s a way of telling how I feel inside. Hopefully this has maybe you have realized how some of this has socialized you, thank you.

Mask Project Reflection
By max Ickes
The project is that we design a mask and write an essay on how we are socialized and who we are as a person. It is a very fun project and I hope future generations have this much fun as I did and I hope they also feel as proud of this project as I did.
The most important lessons I have learned is that how we are targets and how we are socialized in a group and how that can change our life so much.
What I’ve learned about myself is that I am a target and an agent and how I’ve been socialized as a person, and I feel like some of that is good and some is bad.
I am most proud of my essay because I feel like I worked on so hard and revised it so much to where it was beautiful. I still like my mask and I still worked hard and I like it, but I feel more proud of my essay.
For that future I would like to be more netter with my mask and not to be more random with my essay when I’m writing it. Plus I need to remember to not forget things in the future projects.
